Embracing Marketing in a More Authentic Way

A client once shared how excited they were to finally turn their side business into a full-time commitment.

They spent the hour talking about their goals, ideas, future plans, and all the research they had been doing. I could hear the passion and excitement in their voice, and it was inspiring to see how far they had already come. But during our conversation, one thing stood out: they had no real marketing plan in place.

When I gently asked about it, they admitted “Jen, I honestly struggle with marketing. I can’t keep up with it, it feels overwhelming, and I’d rather do the bare minimum.” I was surprised—not because they weren’t capable, but because they were usually such a thoughtful planner and motivated person.

As we explored things further, it became clear that they didn’t truly dislike marketing itself. They disliked the pressure, noise, and inauthentic feeling that often comes with it online.

And honestly? A lot of people feel this way.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed, uncomfortable, or resistant when it comes to marketing yourself or your business, you’re definitely not alone.

Reframing What Marketing Really Means

Marketing doesn’t have to feel pushy, performative, or exhausting. At its core, marketing is simply communication. It’s helping the right people discover who you are, what you offer, and how you may be able to support them.

There are certainly unhealthy marketing tactics online that can make the industry feel overwhelming or discouraging, but there are also many authentic businesses simply trying to connect with the people they genuinely want to help.

The more you begin to understand marketing, the less intimidating it often becomes.

Learn the Basics Without Pressuring Yourself

You don’t need to master everything overnight.

Start by becoming familiar with the basics:

  • how people discover businesses online

  • how social media works

  • what your audience may be searching for

  • how to communicate your message clearly

Read books, listen to podcasts, watch educational videos, or explore beginner-friendly resources at your own pace. Sometimes simply understanding the process can reduce a lot of the fear and resistance around it. You may even discover creative parts of marketing that you genuinely enjoy.

Stay Inspired, But Stay Yourself

Pay attention to how others in your industry communicate and connect with their audience, not to copy them, but to better understand what feels authentic and aligned for you. The most meaningful brands are usually the ones that feel honest, relatable, and human.

Your voice, experiences, and perspective matter more than trying to sound like everyone else online.

Remember: You Don’t Have to Do Everything Alone

Marketing can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re already balancing so many responsibilities.

It’s okay to start small.
It’s okay to learn gradually.
And it’s okay to ask for help when you need it.

Over time, you can always choose to outsource certain tasks, hire support, or simplify your approach in ways that feel more sustainable for your energy and wellbeing.

Marketing doesn’t have to feel intimidating or inauthentic. Sometimes it simply begins with learning how to share what you care about in a way that feels honest, supportive, and true to you.

Cheers,

Jen
